چکیده

We study the complexity of rewrite systems shown terminating via the dependency pair framework using processors for reduction pairs, dependency graphs, or the subterm criterion. The complexity of such systems is bounded by a multiple recursive function, provided the complexity induced by the employed base techniques is at most multiple recursive. Moreover this upper bound is tight. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2, F.4.1, D.2.4, D.2.8

The Derivational Complexity Induced by the Dependency Pair Method

We study the derivational complexity induced by the dependency pair method, enhanced with standard refinements. We obtain upper bounds on the derivational complexity induced by the dependency pair method in terms of the derivational complexity of the base techniques employed. In particular we show that the derivational complexity induced by the dependency pair method based on some direct techni...

Uncurrying for Innermost Termination and Derivational Complexity

First-order applicative term rewriting systems provide a natural framework for modeling higher-order aspects. In earlier work we introduced an uncurrying transformation which is termination preserving and reflecting. In this paper we investigate how this transformation behaves for innermost termination and (innermost) derivational complexity. We prove that it reflects innermost termination and ...

On the Computational Content of Termination Proofs

Given that a program has been shown to terminate using a particular proof, it is natural to ask what we can infer about its complexity. In this paper we outline a new approach to tackling this question in the context of term rewrite systems and recursive path orders. From an inductive proof that recursive path orders are well-founded, we extract an explicit realiser which bounds the derivationa...

AProVE 1.2 : Automatic Termination Proofs in the Dependency Pair Framework

AProVE 1.2 is one of the most powerful systems for automated termination proofs of term rewrite systems (TRSs). It is the first tool which automates the new dependency pair framework [8] and therefore permits a completely flexible combination of different termination proof techniques. Due to this framework, AProVE 1.2 is also the first termination prover which can be fully configured by the user.

The Dependency Pair Framework: Combining Techniques for Automated Termination Proofs

The dependency pair approach is one of the most powerful techniques for automated termination proofs of term rewrite systems. Up to now, it was regarded as one of several possible methods to prove termination. In this paper, we show that dependency pairs can instead be used as a general concept to integrate arbitrary techniques for termination analysis. In this way, the benefits of different te...
